so what's a reverse proxy?

a reverse proxy sits in front of all my sites and answers every visitor first. visitors never talk to the sites directly.

it reads the hostname you typed, handles the https certificate, then quietly forwards your request to the matching container and passes the answer back. that's how the plain and www versions of this domain can be two different pages on one machine.
